The February Daring Bakers' challenge was hosted by Aparna of My Diverse Kitchen and Deeba of Passionate About Baking. They chose Tiramisu as the challenge for the month. Their challenge recipe is based on recipes from The Washington Post, Cordon Bleu at Home and Baking Obsession.

The Italian classic is not one of my favourite desserts. And because of that I've also neve tried to make my own version of it. Still I was looking forward to start making my first tiramisu from scratch, after I read about the month's challenge at the DB forum. Firsta I hade to purchase a cheesecloth, something I've never needed so far and then I got to make the mascarpone. I had some problems in reaching the 190F (as I noticed some other Daring Bakers did as well), but finally it went well and I succeeded in making my first cheese.

Savoiardi biscuits were, as the zabaglione and the vanilla pastry cream as well, delightfully easy to make. And the whole process of assemblying the tiramisu was fun. I ended up making the traditional version, following the recipe and not adding anything. Some of the savoiardi biscuits I made in the ladyfinger shape and used those in a one layer tiramisu.

Some of the biscuits I made round in order to make three layer tiramisu verrines. The verrines were better as I apparently dipped the ladyfinger shaped biscuits too quickly in the sweetened espresso, so they weren't smooth enough. That's what my mom said, who knows more about what a good tiramisu should be like.

Although I liked the making of tiramisu, it still isn't one of my favourite desserts.

Aparna has the very detailed recipe here. Thanks to you and Deeba for a great challenge!

Resepti seuraa suomeksi.
